I am a bit nervous to write this post because I want to do this historical hotel justice. It is a very unique and beautiful place.
One of the things that makes it unique is it’s setting. It is located in an extremely scenic valley near Mount Washington in Carroll, NH. Everywhere you look, when you are there, is scenic. It’s beautiful throughout all of the seasons but I prefer to visit during the Summer. Of course, if you ski, Bretton Woods is very close by and during non-Covid times, there are shuttles that will bring you back and forth between the Bretton Woods ski lodge and the Mount Washington Hotel.
In addition to the beauty of it’s location, the building itself is quite beautiful. It is very elegant and they have made every attempt to maintain the historical aspects of the structure. You sometimes feel as though you are back in time and have arrived at the year 1902! The hotel has a very interesting history. It is worthwhile to learn about it before you visit. The most important aspect of its history is that it was the location of the Bretton Woods International Monetary Conference in 1944. It is also rumored to be haunted by the wife of the man who built the hotel, Carolyn Stickney. Her portrait is hung in the spot where she used to sit and watch all of the guests come into the hotel. It is rumored that she wanted to make sure that she had on the most beautiful outfit and was looking to see what all of the other ladies were wearing. If you would like to experience history and then also have access to more modern amenities, they have that too. There is a new addition to the hotel that has a spa, a conference center and new hotel rooms. This addition is connected to the original hotel so that you may walk back and forth inside of the hotel and enjoy all that it has to offer.
There are many things to do and activities there. Check the website before you go but there is skiing, cross country skiing in their Nordic Center, tennis, golf, ice skating, horseback riding, fishing and they also offer historical tours of the building. Make sure to call and book these things before you go. Also, it is a good idea to book your dining reservations prior to your arrival. If you plan to visit the hotel but not stay overnight, call first, because sometimes the hotel is only open to guests who are staying there.
In conclusion, it’s a beautiful place, with a very rich history and it’s worth a visit. Just make sure that you call first to ensure that everything that you want to see and do is open and available. Also, make dining reservations if you can. Take your camera there. It is beautiful.
